Camp Ravenna Field Trip

Squadron members had the opportunity to take a field trip to the Camp Ravenna Joint Regional Training Center to learn about some of the high-tech training tools that the Army uses to train soldiers.

After a briefing by Maj O'Connor and SSG Miller, the cadets marched about half a mile to the interior of Camp Ravenna to the Virtual Convoy Operations Trainer (VCOT) and the Engagement Skills Trainer (EST).

The VCOT uses virtual reality technology to train soldiers in convoy operations in situations that mirror real-life combat situations that soldiers will encounter in current operational areas. The simulation requires that the trainees maintain proper vehicle distance, engage combatants, avoid hazards such as IEDs and non-combatants while maintaining constant radio contact with the rest of the convoy.

The EST trains soldiers in the use of the M-4 carbine battle rifle and other weapons including the .50 caliber and the M249 SAW light machine gun. The weapons, constructed of the same material as their real-world counterparts and including an air-powered recoil system, allow soldiers to become familiar with the weapons they will be using in a safe environment, going through numerous virtual scenarios that similar to what soldiers will encounter in current operational theaters.

Special thanks to all of the soldiers that spent their morning with us. More photos on our Facebook page
